What Are the Different Energia Smart Meter Plans?

Energia’s smart meter plans are designed to utilise smart meter technology and are structured to suit different household needs and lifestyles.

The main idea behind these plans is "Time-of-Use" (ToU) pricing, encouraging customers to shift energy-intensive activities to periods of lower demand when rates are cheaper.

Smart Data

This plan provides a standard time-of-use structure with distinct day, night, and peak rates, encouraging you to be mindful of consumption during the most expensive hours.

How Do I Compare Smart Meter Plans?

To compare smart meter plans effectively, focus on these key aspects:

  • Your Electricity Usage Patterns: Day, night, peak, EV charging, or weekend usage habits.
  • Plan Type Suitability: Choose between time-of-use (SST), 24-hour flat rate, Night Boost/EV, or Weekender plans based on your usage.
  • Unit Rates (c/kWh): Compare prices across all relevant time bands (day, peak, night, boost, free periods).
  • Standing Charges: Compare fixed daily/annual costs for urban and rural areas.
  • New Customer Discounts: Understand their value, duration, and application (unit rates, standing charges, or total bill).
  • Estimated Annual Bill (EAB): Use it as a guide, but aim for a personalized comparison based on your actual smart meter data.
  • Contract Terms: Check contract length and any exit fees.
  • Additional Benefits: Look for good energy insights tools, customer service reputation, green energy options, and payment method discounts.

What Are the Benefits of Energia Smart Meter Plans?

Switching to an Energia smart meter plan offers several advantages:

  • Accurate Billing: Smart meters automatically send meter readings, eliminating estimated bills and ensuring you only pay for the electricity you've used.
  • Detailed Energy Insights: Access to your energy consumption data through your Energia online account allows you to monitor usage patterns, identify energy-hungry appliances, and make informed decisions to optimize consumption.
  • Potential for Cost Savings: By aligning your usage with cheaper off-peak rates, particularly with ToU plans, you have the potential to significantly reduce your electricity bills.
  • Environmental Contribution: By understanding your energy usage and shifting to off-peak times, you contribute to a more balanced grid and support Ireland's transition to a more sustainable energy system.
  • Support for Microgeneration: If you have solar panels or other microgeneration systems, smart meters enable accurate tracking of exported energy, potentially allowing you to receive payments for surplus electricity.
