Who Is Yuno Energy?

question mark

Yuno Energy entered the Irish energy market in August 2023 just qualified by the CRU, and has the goal of becoming the cheapest energy provider in Ireland. Yuno Energy is a subsidiary of Prepay Power, but unlike its parent company, Yuno Energy is offering a range of bill-pay options rather than traditional pay-as-you-go. They've become the newest provider to join the market since 2020.

What’s Yuno Energy’s Edge in the Irish Energy Market?

Yuno Energy claims to utilise new technology and flexible payments in order to shake up the Irish energy market. Yuno Energy uses predictions and forecasts to give you the most accurate bill possible, working on a basis of advance payments. They also offer all of this through their app and “don’t do online portals.”

Who Owns Yuno Energy?

As mentioned above, Yuno Energy is a subsidiary company of Prepay Power, which has been on the market since 2009. Prepay Power has traditionally offered pay-as-you-go solutions to electricity, gas and broadband tariffs, and have established themselves as one of the bigger suppliers.

Will PrepayPower and Yuno Energy be the same company? Yuno Energy operates as an entirely separate company to PrepayPower. Yuno Energy has its own call centre as well as its own energy pricing which is entirely unrelated to Prepay Power. An important difference is that Prepay Power will continue offering its pay-as-you-go tariffs whereas Yuno Energy will be bill-pay.

What Has Made It Possible for Yuno Energy?

It’s no secret that the Irish energy market has gone through a turbulent time since the pandemic with four suppliers: Bright Energy, Glowpower, Iberdrola, and Panda Power exiting the energy market due to the high gas prices. However, over the course of 2023, natural gas prices have steadily fallen allowing for new suppliers to enter the market to offer new deals.

Does Yuno Energy Offer Gas Tariffs?

Currently Yuno Energy doesn’t offer any gas tariffs but they’re due to enter the gas market in 2024 and begin supplying customers with gas only and dual-fuel tariffs. Until then, they’re offering electricity only tariffs so if you have gas at home, you would have to pay two different suppliers until the Yuno gas tariffs are available.

Is Yuno Energy the Cheapest Energy Supplier in Ireland?

Yuno Energy with its Fixed Discount Plan is currently the cheapest supplier on the market when compared the other standard rates for different customers. However, their other rates, particularly their variable rates, are more of less the same as other providers. In particular, their Smart Tariffs are considerably more expensive than some other providers such as Energia or Waterpower.

What Are the Yuno Pros and Cons?

pros cons

Finding the right energy supplier in Ireland is tough but having another to think about might help us compare different suppliers better since there’s more competition. Although it’s still early days, there are some impressions we can make about Yuno Energy’s advantages and disadvantages for each given type of customer.

Advantages

  • New supplier
  • Full control with the Yuno App
  • Flexible payments
  • Customer support availability
  • Energy security

Disadvantages

  • Upfront payment to join
  • Advanced payements
  • Only credit/debit card
  • No online portal
  • Expensive variable rate

What Are Yuno Energy’s Advantages?

As a new energy supplier on the market, there are a lot of advantages to Yuno Energy being fresh and offering a new approach. Here’s a few of the key advantages of Yuno Energy:

  • New Supplier
As the new energy supplier on the block, Yuno Energy is more likely to offer great discounts and rewards in order to attract new customers. Since Yuno Energy wants to grow, pushing for great customer service to build its reputation is a must.
  • Full Control with the Yuno App
Yuno doesn’t believe in having online portals to manage your energy account. Instead they’ve created a state of the art app where you can see and control your entire energy account from your phone or tablet.
  • Flexible Payments
Yuno Energy’s advanced payments system allows you greater flexibility over your spending. You can set how much you want to pay according to your estimated bill and pick your preferred day of the month you want the payment to come out. If you pay more than you use, this is discounted from your following bill.
  • Customer Support Availability
Unlike many energy suppliers, whose customer support centres tend only to be only during work hours, Yuno Energy has customer support open 7 days of the week for you to get in contact with them.
  • Energy Security
Since Yuno Energy is owned by one of the biggest energy suppliers in Ireland, it’s unlikely that you’ll face similar problems like with Bright Energy or Panda Power where they need to withdraw from the market. This can give you great energy security for the future!

What Are Yuno Energy Disadvantages?

Along with their advantages, Yuno Energy also has a few disadvantages that might put off a lot of customers when it comes to moving their energy over to them. Here’s a list of the more noticeable problems that might make some customers uncomfortable about switching suppliers:

  • Upfront Payment to Join
Instead of having a bill after your first month with Yuno Energy, you need to pay your bill upfront based on your estimated usage. Although if you use less than this, you’ll be refunded, it’s not all that convenient to pay for your energy upfront especially if you’re still due to pay your current supplier.
  • Advanced Payments
Yuno Energy relies on advanced payments rather than giving you a bill after you’ve used the energy. This can be flexible, but it’s also frustrating since it doesn’t allow you time to dispute a bill if you think it’s wrong, let alone get the money back.
  • Only Credit/Debit Cards
This can make a lot of customers uncomfortable since with a credit or debit card, you have a lot less control over your money than with a direct debit. With a direct debit, you can cancel and charge back a payment that you don’t feel is right, but with a bank card this is impossible.
  • No Online Portal
Since there’s no online portal and that everything’s done through the app, this can make less-technology savvy customers feel excluded. Although there’s a contact number, it can still be awkward needing to call every time if you have an issue to discuss and you can’t work it out on your phone.
  • Expensive Variable Rate
Despite their Fixed Discount Rate being lower, Yuno Energy’s variable rate isn’t much different than others on the market. Even though with prices falling, they’re still volatile and there’s every possibility that these prices will fluctuate often still.

What Does the Yuno Energy App Offer?

smartphone

The main Yuno Energy claim to fame is that they offer a purely app-experience, rather than having an online portal. The Yuno Energy app has a lot of features to help you manage your energy consumption and allows you to track your usage almost exactly.

What Can I Do with the Yuno Energy App?

The Yuno Energy App has three main panels that you can access that give you different data about your energy usage. You can tap through these to get an accurate view of what’s going on so you’re never in the dark.

  1. Home Screen
On your home screen, you’ll be able to see the progress between your forecast of your usage and the prediction for your next bill. You’ll see a progress bar indicating the difference between your actual usage and what you’re predicated to pay. You’ll also be able to see your next prediction too.
  2. Usage
After tapping on the Usage icon, you get to see a breakdown of your usage in kilowatt hours (kWh) over 7 days. You can even drill down further to see what your usage is by the hour!
  3. Payments
By tapping on the Payments icon, you get to see your payment history as well as your upcoming payments for your next bill. You’re able to open and view PDF copies of your bills that you can also download.
