What Makes Up Energia’s Gas Prices?

The components of a gas bill, with Energia, will contain the following costs:

  • Standard Unit Rate:
Approximately €0.10 - €0.12 per kWh depending on if you are availing of the new customer discount. This is the cost for each unit of gas you use. Discounted rates for new customers can be significantly lower for the initial contract period. For instance, Energia currently offer a 10% discount on this standard rate for the first year.
  • Standing Charge:
€140 including VAT. This is a fixed charge that covers the cost of maintaining the gas network and supply infrastructure, regardless of how much gas you consume.
  • Carbon Tax:
The carbon tax is an additional charge per kWh introduced by the government to incentivise lower carbon emissions. As of May 1, 2025, the carbon tax has increased, adding approximately €17 annually to gas bills. The unit rate including carbon tax might be around €0.0125 per kWh.

Things to Consider When Comparing Energia Gas Prices

As when comparing any electricity or gas provider, it's important to take the following into consideration:

  • Unit Rates: This is the cost per kWh of gas you consume. Lower unit rates generally lead to lower bills if your consumption is high.
  • Standing Charges: This is a fixed daily cost. If your gas usage is low, a lower standing charge might be more beneficial.
  • Discounts: Pay close attention to the percentage discount, the duration it applies for (usually 12 months for new customers), and the conditions required to receive it (e.g., direct debit, e-billing).
  • Welcome Bonuses/Credits: Some providers offer a one-time credit to your account when you switch. Factor this into the first year's cost.
  • Contract Length and Exit Fees: Most discounted rates come with a 12-month contract. Know the exit fee if you decide to switch before the term ends.
  • Dual Fuel Discounts: If you also need electricity, comparing dual fuel offers from Energia and other providers can reveal more significant overall savings.
  • Carbon Tax: Remember that the carbon tax is included in the unit rate and will be similar across all providers, as it's a government levy.

Does Energia Have PAYG Gas Prices?

Energia does not currently offer PAYG gas plans.

Their gas plans are typically based on a billed, post-consumption model where you are billed every two months for the gas that you have consumed.

If you are looking for ways to better control your spending on home gas, Energia do offer a Level Pay system where a pre-agreed, fixed amount is paid each month in order to help customers manage their home finance.

This amount is subject to change should your consumption increase or decrease significantly.
