What Are PrepayPower's Electricity Unit Rates per kWh?
PrepayPower offers various unit rates depending on your meter type and your location (Urban or Rural).
Prices for rural meters are typically the same unit rate but carry a higher standing charge due to network costs.
Standard PAYG Tariffs (24hr): PrepayPower's standard PAYG unit rate is 33.62c/kWh. This flat rate applies if you have a traditional 24-hour meter.
Nightsaver PAYG Tariffs: For those with Nightsaver meters, PrepayPower offers a dual-rate structure, with a significantly cheaper night rate:
Day Rate: 37.22c/kWh
Night Rate: 18.38c/kWh (typically between 11 PM and 8 AM, but check specific times)
This plan is beneficial if you can shift appliance use (like washing machines or dishwashers) to off-peak night hours.
Smart Meter Plans (Time-of-Use Tariffs): PrepayPower's smart meter plans use a three-rate structure, with the cheapest rate being the Peak Rate.
Day Rate: 41.79c/kWh (Typically 8 AM to 5 PM)
Night Rate: 37.19c/kWh (Typically 11 PM to 8 AM)
Peak Rate: 19.28c/kWh
To benefit most, you should shift energy usage (such as charging an EV or running a dishwasher) to the night and peak slots.

What Are PrepayPower's Standing Charges on its Electricity Rates?
The standing charge is a fixed daily fee that covers the costs of providing electricity to your home, such as network maintenance and administrative costs.
This charge is applied regardless of your electricity consumption and varies significantly between Urban and Rural areas.

What is the Prepayment Service Charge?
In addition to the unit rate and standing charge, PrepayPower charges a Prepayment Service Charge. This annual fee is €131.65 for traditional meters and €164.86 for smart meters (including VAT) to cover the costs of maintaining the Pay-As-You-Go metering infrastructure and service.
Managing Your PrepayPower Account: Top-Ups and Emergency Credit
The convenience and control of PrepayPower's system come from easy account management features designed to ensure you rarely run out of supply.
How to Top Up Your Meter
PrepayPower offers multiple convenient ways to add credit to your account:
PrepayPower Mobile App: The most popular method. Top up instantly anytime, anywhere, and track your usage in real-time.
Online: Use the dedicated top-up section on the PrepayPower website.
Retail Outlets: Buy a top-up code in person at any Payzone retail outlet nationwide.
Phone: Top up via the automated telephone service.
Accessing Emergency and Friendly Credit
A core benefit of a Pay-As-You-Go meter is the safety net provided by credit facilities:
Emergency Credit: In the event your credit runs low, and you can't top up, you can activate up to €20 of Emergency Credit. This is a safety buffer that is automatically paid back from your next top-up.
Friendly Credit Hours: PrepayPower will not disconnect your supply during specific periods, even if your credit runs out. These periods typically include all weekends (Friday evening through Sunday night) and Bank Holidays.
How Do PrepayPower's Electricity Rates Compare to Other PAYG Providers?
When comparing electricity prices across Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) providers, you must consider three main components: the unit rate, the standing charge, and the prepayment service charge.

What Else Makes Up my Bill Apart from PrepayPower Electricity Rates?
Your total electricity cost includes charges mandated by the government and network operators:
Public Service Obligation (PSO) Levy: This is a government-mandated charge applied to all electricity customers to support renewable energy generation. From October 2025, the annual charge is approximately €26.29 (including VAT).
Value Added Tax (VAT): The current reduced VAT rate for residential electricity is 9%. This is applied to your total electricity costs (unit rates, standing charges, and service charges).
Are There Exit Fees?
PrepayPower applies a termination fee if you end your contract before the end of the minimum initial period (typically 12 months). This fee is a maximum of €50.
Do PrepayPower Have a Microgeneration Rate?
PrepayPower also offers competitive rates for customers generating their own electricity through solar panels or other renewable sources.
PrepayPower's Microgeneration Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) tariff is 15.89c/kWh (including VAT) for every unit of excess electricity you export.
Payments are typically applied as a credit (a top-up) to your PrepayPower account twice a year (biannually).
Like any electricity provider, PrepayPower has its advantages and disadvantages:
Pros:
Control and Transparency: The smart meter and app provide detailed, real-time insights into your energy consumption, allowing for better budgeting and energy efficiency.
No Unexpected Bills: The PAYG model eliminates bill shock and estimated bills.
Renewable Energy: PrepayPower's electricity supply is certified as 100% renewable.
Competitive Microgeneration Rates: Attractive for households with solar panels.
Cons:
Higher Unit Rates: The recent price increase means PrepayPower's unit rates are now higher, especially on standard PAYG plans, compared to some billed tariffs from other suppliers.
Prepayment Service Charge: This additional annual fee is unique to the PAYG model.
Requires Active Management: To truly benefit from PrepayPower's smart plans, users need to be proactive in monitoring their usage and adjusting habits.
Early Exit Fees: Standard for most contracts, but important to be aware of if your circumstances change.
