Electric Ireland
PrepayPower
When comparing the "standard" Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans across providers like Pinergy, PrepayPower, and Electric Ireland, it's crucial to look beyond just the unit rate.
The total cost is influenced by the unit rate, the standing charge, and the specific "prepayment service charge" that these types of plans carry.

Public Service Obligation (PSO) Levy: Government-mandated charge to support renewable energy projects within Ireland. For the period leading up to October 2025, it is approximately €3.52 per month (€42.25 per year, including VAT), with a projected reduction to around €1.94 per month from October 2025.
Value Added Tax (VAT): The current reduced VAT rate for residential electricity is 9% This percentage is applied to your total electricity costs, including the unit rates, standing charges, and the prepayment service charge. Pinergy also offers competitive rates for customers generating their own electricity through solar panels or other renewable sources.
As of June 2025, Pinergy provides a microgeneration export rate of 25c per kWh (excluding VAT) for any excess electricity fed back into the grid.
This is a significant incentive for those investing in renewable energy solutions at home. You will mostly need a smart meter to accurately measure exported electricity.
Like any electricity provider, Pinergy has its advantages and disadvantages:
Pros:
Control and Transparency: The smart meter and app provide detailed, real-time insights into your energy consumption, allowing for better budgeting and energy efficiency.
No Unexpected Bills: The PAYG model eliminates bill shock and estimated bills.
Renewable Energy: Pinergy's electricity supply is certified as 100% renewable.
Tailored Plans: Lifestyle smart plans cater to specific usage patterns (e.g., Working From Home, EV Drive Time).
Competitive Microgeneration Rates: Attractive for households with solar panels.
Cons:
Potentially Higher Unit Rates: Some reviews suggest Pinergy's PAYG unit rates can be higher compared to traditional billed tariffs from other suppliers, especially on standard PAYG plans.
Prepayment Service Charge: This additional annual fee is unique to the PAYG model.
Requires Active Management: To truly benefit from Pinergy's smart plans, users need to be proactive in monitoring their usage and adjusting habits.
Early Exit Fees: Standard for most contracts, but important to be aware of if your circumstances change.
