Currently, ESB Networks do not offer a dedicated smart meter app for viewing smart meter data. However, customers with smart meters can access their electricity usage information through their ESB Networks online account. This online portal is available online, on tablets, and smartphones.

Is There an ESB Smart Meter App in Ireland?

While ESB Networks, are responsible for the smart meters in Ireland, it does not currently offer a mobile app specifically for viewing your smart meter data, you can access this information through their online account on their website.

Through this portal, you can see your:

  • Daily, weekly, and monthly electricity usage
  • Access charts representing trends in your electricity consumption
  • Download up to two years of data

You can also manage other aspects of your connection, such as viewing power outage information and finding your MPRN number.

ESB Smart Meter App: How Do I Access my Data?

To access your smart meter data, you need to register for an ESB Networks online account.

To register, you’ll need the following:

  • MPRN Number: This unique 11-digit identifier for your electricity connection can be found on your electricity bill.
  • Mobile Phone Number: This is required for two-factor authentication to protect your data.
  • Email Address: A verification code will be sent to you to verify your identity as part of the registration process.

You can register online via the ESB Networks registration portal.

Once registered and logged in, you should be able to navigate to the section that displays your smart meter usage data.

ESB Smart Meter App: What Data Can I See?

Through the ESB Network's online account, smart meter users can:

  • View detailed electricity usage: Customers can see their daily, weekly, and monthly electricity consumption patterns in kWh. This data is typically updated regularly, although it may take 36–48 hours for the latest information to appear.
  • Analyse consumption trends: You can view charts and graphs to help users visualize their electricity usage and identify periods of high consumption. This insight can help you to make informed decisions about when and how you use electricity.
  • Download usage data: For more in-depth analysis or record-keeping, users can typically download up to two years of their electricity usage data, even if they have switched electricity suppliers within that period.
  • Access other services: The online account also allows users to perform other actions, such as submitting meter readings for standard meters, viewing power outage status in their area, finding their MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number), and making payments for ESB Networks invoices.

ESB Smart Meter App: Do Electricity Suppliers Have Smart Meter Apps?

While ESB Networks manages the infrastructure and the provision of the smart meter data, your electricity provider may also offer their own mobile applications.

The following suppliers have free apps available on the Apple and Google store:

While these apps may not offer the level of data that is available from ESB Networks, they often integrate with the smart meter data provided and offer additional features such as:

  • Bill viewing and payment: Easily access and pay your electricity bills.
  • Tariff management: Explore and manage your electricity tariff, including any smart electricity plans that may be available.
  • Energy insights and tips: Some apps provide personalised advice on how to reduce energy consumption based on your usage patterns.
  • Account management: Update your contact details and manage other aspects of your account.
  • Submit meter reading (for non-smart meters): Although smart meters send readings automatically, these apps may still allow manual submissions for gas or in cases where a smart meter hasn't yet been installed or activated for full smart functionality.

It's advisable to check with your specific electricity supplier to see if they offer a mobile app with smart meter integration.

Will There Be an ESB Smart Meter App in the Future?

As the smart meter rollout continues, it's possible that ESB Networks may introduce more integrated and user-friendly mobile applications in the future.

The focus will likely be on providing increasingly granular data, more intuitive interfaces, and features that actively help consumers optimize their energy usage.

What Are the Benefits of Smart Meters in Ireland?

Smart meters are a key component of Ireland's National Climate Action Plan, aiming to create a more efficient and sustainable energy system.

Key benefits for consumers include:

  • Accurate Billing: Eliminates estimated bills, ensuring you only pay for the electricity you actually use.
  • Energy Usage Insights: Provides detailed data on when and how you use electricity, allowing customers to make informed choices when comparing electricity prices and reduce consumption.
  • Smart Tariffs: Enables access to time-of-use tariffs, where electricity prices vary depending on the time of day, potentially leading to cost savings if you can shift some usage to off-peak hours.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: By promoting energy awareness and efficiency, smart meters can contribute to a lower overall carbon footprint.
  • Improved Grid Management: Facilitates better power outage detection and network management for ESB Networks.
  • Support for Microgeneration: Allows households with solar panels or other microgeneration sources to easily export excess energy back to the grid and receive payment.

Is My Personal Data Secure on an ESB Smart Meter?

Concerns about data privacy are natural with the introduction of smart meters.

ESB Networks emphasises that protecting the privacy and security of customer information is a core priority.

All data collected is securely stored in a central Meter Data Management System and that they comply fully with GDPR legislation.

Customers can also access their data through the online portal to monitor what information is being collected.
