What Caused my Power Outage?
Power outages are where the power supply is either partially or completely cut off from our homes and businesses.
Generally speaking, there are two types that will occur: planned and unplanned.
These have different causes, and you should be aware of both so you’re aware of how long it might take to get your power back:
-
Planned
A planned power outage is usually a routine cut-off of the power supply by ESB networks so that they can carry out important maintenance on the grid. You will be informed ahead of time so you can make arrangements while the power is off.
-
Unplanned
Unplanned power outages are usually sudden and unexpected due to the line being damaged. These can go on for much longer than planned power cuts and are often caused by weather conditions such as heavy snowfall, flooding, or storms.
If there is no obvious reason for your power outage, such as due to storms, extreme weather scenarios, follow these steps to try to find out what happened:
-
Ask Your Neighbours
Though the power in your house might be out, you can always text or knock on your neighbour’s doors to find out what’s going on.
-
Check Your Fuse Box
If you can't contact your neighbours, and it seems other homes in the area still have power, check your fuse box to see if your trip switch is in the 'on' position. Or if an appliance has blown a fuse.
If you have done these checks and there is still obvious reason for your power outage, you should contact ESB Networks to further investigate the issue.
If you are experiencing a power outage in Finglas, and you have confirmed that the issue is not coming from your home, you should contact ESB Networks.
The phone numbers for ESB Networks is: 1800 372 999 or +353 21 238 2410.
When contacting ESB Networks, make sure to have either your MPRN and the name or phone number associated with your account along with your Eircode nearby.
Be Careful of an ESB Networks Call-Out Fee! You may be liable for a callout fee of up to €136 if the issue ends up being your appliances or your fuse box, and not an ESB-related issue. Make absolutely sure that all your appliances are working perfectly before reporting an issue to ESB networks.
