Who Is Three Broadband?

Three Broadband, often known as simply Three or 3, is one of nine large broadband providers within The Republic of Ireland. Launched in July 2005, Three Broadband has since grown to hold a current 39% market share of Irish broadband services, along with claiming to have 99% area coverage, along with the largest 5G network in Ireland. Certainly no small-fry in the Irish telecoms market.

Who Are Three Broadbands Main Competitors?

While Three Broadband claims to be the largest broadband provider in Ireland, they certainly have some competition. Though Irish households aren’t exactly spoiled for choice in their broadband service providers, there are eight further companies with which they have to compete.

While there are further smaller-scale companies that focus on the rural or harder-to-reach corners of Ireland, these are the main competitors that you will come across most often when seeking to compare broadband.

What Broadband Packages Do Three Offer Households?

Image of a magnifying glass inspecting a document

Unusually for Irish broadband providers, Three offers a selection of broadband formats covering both the 4G and 5G networks, meaning that a physical landline connection is not required to use their services, with the exception of their few fibre deals and mobile broadband.

Freeing their services from the dependency of a landline means that you can place your router anywhere within your house as long as a signal can be detected from a network cell tower. This signal is then re-transmitted from your router as WiFi, allowing you to access a broadband connection with greater freedom, and utilize superfast 5G speeds.

What Are the Three Broadband Packages?

As the name suggests, the packages covered within this section follow the standard format of monthly bill pay (direct debit) for a fixed contract of 24 months. As a perk, they also all come with three months of free service.

Though three of these packages are a 5G service, to avail of these you would need to ensure that your home is in an area where Three has 5G broadband coverage. If your area cannot access 5G at this time, then the 3 Broadband Unlimited 4G package is the best solution for you. Be advised, however, that the 4G package is subject to a 4.5% price increase in April each year.

What About Three Prepay Broadband?

Bill pay isn’t necessarily for everyone. If you prefer to avoid long-term contracts, have a fluctuating income, or have recently moved home and like with your energy, are just looking for the best deals, then Three Broadband’s prepay package could be of interest to you.

This package is without a contract and works on a top-up basis, similar to pay-as-you-go phones. Once you receive your router, a top-up of €30.00 is required to activate your plan. From there, as long as you top up a further €30.00 within 28 days of your first service activation you will renew your 4G service for the following month. This allows you to avail of 30GB of data each month.

What Are the Three Broadband Reviews Like?

Image of scales with a cross and tick at opposite sides

Though broadband reviews on websites such as Trustpilot often don’t give the full picture, they can still be useful for gauging public opinion. Currently, Three Ireland has a score of 1.4 out of 5, from a total of over 999 reviews. Bear in mind however that some of these reviews may be for other services, such as mobiles, and so the score is not a full reflection of their broadband service quality.
