Irish Wind Farms Record Best Ever June Power Generation

Ireland's wind energy sector achieved a record-breaking performance in June 2025, providing 30% of the nation's electricity and contributing to a significant drop in wholesale electricity prices. The latest monthly report from Wind Energy Ireland (WEI) highlights the strongest June on record for wind generation, coupled with a notable impact on consumer costs.
Record-Breaking Wind Generation and Demand Met
According to the WEI report, wind generation in June was the highest ever for that month. This strong performance meant that Irish wind farms met 30% of the country's electricity demand, a slight increase from June 2024 and a new record.
Irish solar farms also experienced a record month, further bolstering renewable energy contributions.
Despite a marginal increase in overall electricity demand, from 3,019 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in June 2024 to 3,151 GWh in June 2025, the surge in wind power had a tangible effect on the market.
Best June Record month for June for the amount of power produced by Irish wind farms. Kerry The county that produced more wind energy than any other. Five Months Consecutive months of falling wholesale electricity prices. 939 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of wind energy generated last month.
Price Reduction Thanks to Wind Energy
The average price of electricity in Ireland during June 2025 was €95.21 per megawatt-hour (MWh). Crucially, the report reveals a stark contrast: on days with the most wind energy, the average price plummeted to €67.15 per MWh, while on days with the least wind energy, it soared to €115.06 per MWh.
This clearly demonstrates the cost-saving benefits of robust wind generation.
Furthermore, the monthly price comparison shows that wholesale electricity prices in 2025 have been consistently lower than in 2024, and have been falling for the past five consecutive months, signalling a positive trend for consumers.
CEO Highlights Key Role of Renewables
Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, emphasized the vital role of renewable energy. "Our members provided nearly a third of Ireland’s electricity during the first half of 2025, and last month was a particularly strong June month for renewable energy generation.
He emphasised how:
"Our wind farms are Ireland’s leading source of renewable electricity, playing a key role in reducing our dependency on imported fossil fuels and boosting Ireland’s energy security."
He further urged for accelerated development: "If we can accelerate the delivery of new wind and solar farms, we can continue to reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels and put money back in people’s pockets."
Top Performing Counties and Overall Impact
The report also highlighted the top five counties for wind power generation in June 2025
Overall, June was recognized as the "best June" on record for the amount of power produced by Irish wind farms. In June alone, 939 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of wind energy were generated, with Kerry producing more wind energy than any other county:
County | Wind Generation (GWh) | Share of Ireland's Wind Power |
---|---|---|
Kerry | 105 | 11.1% |
Cork | 83 | 8.8% |
Mayo | 65 | 6.9% |
Galway | 64 | 6.8% |
Offaly | 52 | 5.5% |
What Does This Mean for My Electricity Bills?
The significant increase in wind generation directly impacts electricity prices by introducing more low-cost power into the system.
As the data shows, on days with higher wind output, the wholesale price of electricity drops considerably, almost €50 per MWh lower than on days with less wind. While the final price on your personal electricity bill includes various charges beyond the wholesale cost (such as network fees, taxes, and supplier margins), this consistent downward pressure on wholesale prices translates to tangible benefits for consumers.
The more electricity generated by wind, the less Ireland relies on expensive, imported fossil fuels, which are subject to global price volatility.
This increased energy independence contributes to greater price stability and can lead to more competitive offers from electricity suppliers, ultimately helping to put money back in people's pockets over time.
