Government Schemes
The Irish government offer a range of schemes aimed at older, and more vulnerable homeowners who may have trouble covering the costs of their home energy bills.
- Household Benefits Package
Provides a daily allowance towards electricity and gas bills and is available to anyone over the age of 70. Those under the age of 70 can still apply provided they meet certain criteria. - Fuel Allowance
A weekly payment to assist with heating costs during the winter months, September to April. Eligibility is based on income and qualifying social welfare payments. - Free Electricity Allowance
As part of the Household Benefits Package, homeowners over the age of 70 are entitled to a monthly allowance of €35 towards their electricity bills. Those under the age of 70 can apply provided they meet certain criteria and pass a means test. - Free Electricity Credits
As part of Budget 2025, the Irish government provided each household an electricity credit of €250 to help with expensive winter energy bills.

While not a direct financial assistance towards energy bills, by increasing the energy efficiency of your home, you can save money on your home energy bills. In particular, they can help with lowering your home heating bills. - Disability Allowance
While payments are made to people suffering from physical or mental disabilities who have a reduced capacity to earn money, it can be used towards paying your energy bills.
