Eir began in 1984 as Bord Telecom Eireann, a state-owned telecommunications monopoly. The company name references both "air" (wireless communication) and "eir" from "Eireann" (Ireland). Though based in Ireland, Eir is incorporated in Jersey, Channel Islands, UK.
Originally, Eir operated the mobile network "Eircell" until its 1991 sale to Vodafone. The company re-entered mobile markets in 2005 by acquiring Meteor Mobile. Following a 2015 rebranding from Eircom, the company officially became Eir.
