What Is Eir Bill Pay?

image of a magnifying glass inspecting a document

If you have ever had to pay for bills such as energy, broadband, mobile broadband or waste disposal, then you will be aware that you generally have multiple options to select from. Mobiles are no different to this, with one of the most popular options of payment management being bill pay.

Bill pay (also known as direct debit), is the establishment of a regular set payment authorised between your bank by yourself, and a receiving company, such as Eir. This tends to occur on a set day in the month, and typically comes in the form of a set-term contact, such as 6, 12 or 24 months. At the end of this period, your plan will default to a standard out-of-bundle rate, which tends to be significantly higher.

What Are the Advantages of Eir Bill Pay?

While Eir bill pay tends to be the preferred method for most people, prepay (also known as PAYG - Pay as You Go) is a popular second option.

Prepay enables people to purchase or renew services only when they desire. This is usually done by adding credit to an account, which can typically be completed by contacting Eir customer care, logging onto the online account, or calling/texting one of the automated top-up lines.

Generally speaking, Bill pay has a lot of advantages over Pay As Your Go. Features such as:

  • Stability
Bill pay offers a lot of stability when it comes to your bills since you'll always know what your paying month to month. You won't have to worry about topping up either since everything included in your Bill pay package will automatically reset at the end of the month.

  • Long Term Contract
Having a long term contract between 12 to 24 months is great for protecting yourself against rises in your bills and other possible Eir bill price hikes.

  • Phone Inclusions
Probably the best part is being able to get a top of the range phone from Eir for a fraction of its normal price. You will continue to pay monthly towards the phone but once your contract has ended you'll be able to get a free upgrade!

There are some drawbacks to have a Bill pay phone however, such as:

  • Automatic Payments
You'll need to have enough money in your account in order to cover the bill payments that come out automatically. This can be inconvenient for some people who prefer to control what they're spending themselves.

  • Commitment
The idea of being locked into a contract for an extended period of time can be daunting for many people. There also disadvantages of being in a long term contract since it can require a high exit fee to leave it.

  • Credit Check
You'll quite often need to have a credit check to make sure you're good to go before you can take out the contract. This can be awkward for some customers who might just prefer Pay As Your Go. If you're taking out an Eir business bill pay phone, you'll likely need to have a credit check too.

Though Eir prepay mobile options are smaller than those available through Eir bill pay, existing prepay customers still have a choice of 13 phone choices, while prepay customers have a choice of 12. These contain a mix of new and refurbished phones, ranging from €39.99 to €449.99, and include some high-end models such as the iPhone 11.

Regardless of which Eir bill pay package you chose, you also get to choose any out of 23 mobile phones to come alongside it. These models range from popular modern models such as the iPhone 14 Pro 512GB at an additional cost of €949, or a variety of less pricey phone models, with 11 being classed as free.

The Eir bill pay phones also come with the choice of keeping your existing Eir phone number or requesting a new number. Depending on the phone model and plan selected, requesting a new phone number will set you back up a whopping €200 to €300, which could be quite the deterrent for new customers seeking a long-term contract.

Watch out for out-of-bundle rates! Eir charges 99c per day for 250Mb, 2c per Mb and €20.48 per GB thereafter for excess data usage. Call minutes are charged at 30c per minute, and SMS at 15c per text. If you are running low, consider taking out a single usage pack upgrade.

Eir currently has a total of 23 bill pay mobile phones to choose from, ranging from big brands like Apple and Samsung to lesser-known but competitively priced mobiles by Oppo. Here is a sample of the most popular models currently available, and what they will set you back.

If you are wondering why some of the phones are classed as “free”, this is because these mobiles are available at no extra cost to existing Eir bill pay customers. To avail of one of these phones, you must be on a valid bill pay plan which is due an upgrade. You would then be able to trade in your old mobile and renew/upgrade your plan to acquire a new phone. A total of 10 phone models are available as “free” on the eir.ie website.

How Can I Upgrade Your Eir Bill Pay Phones?

image of a mobile phone with sparkles

If you already have an Eir bill pay phone or contract and are seeking to upgrade your package or device, you can check your options by inputting your phone number in the Eir bill pay upgrade availability checker here, or within the MyEir mobile app.

Typically upgrading your services should come when either your contract has expired, or you are close to the end of your contractual period. Changing your package too early could potentially result in penalties due to changing the contract mid-way, in addition to the offers you can access being less competitively priced.

What About Eir Bill Pay Sim-Only Deals?

For those who are comfortable with their existing device, and would prefer to have an Eir bill pay sim-only deal, Eir offers two options. Each of these runs as a 30-day rolling plan, up to a 12-month period. After the initial 12-month period expires, a price increase of €15 applies to both of these plans thereafter, meaning that it is very important to keep an eye on how long your contract has left, and start checking for prices before incurring out-of-contract charges.

These plans also include unlimited texts, unlimited Irish calls, and no limits on 5G data as standard. Let’s take a look at their differences now.

Eir Bill Pay Sim Only Deals
Plan Name Plan Price International Minutes Calls & Texts Data Limits EU Data Allowance
Eir Mobile Connect - 30 Day €14.99 None Included Unlimited No limits 5G data 30 Gb
Eir Mobile Complete - 30 day €19.99 200 Minutes & Texts Unlimited No limits 5G data 50 Gb

How Can I Cancel Eir Bill Pay?

If you are looking to cancel your Eir Bill pay contract, be it for mobile broadband mobile, or other such services, you should be aware that early cancellations can incur additional costs. These costs could come in the form of a single early termination fee, or if the contract has a significant period of time remaining, you may still need to pay for the remainder of the service period as a one-off Early Cease Charge (ECC) fee.

Generally, a minimum notice period of 30 days is required to be given in advance of service cancellation unless otherwise stated within your contract. This notice can be given to the customer care team directly by calling 1901 from Eir bill pay phones.

It is important to check your policy information and the Eir terms and conditions before terminating your contract to understand your options, and how to begin the process.
