Imagine Broadband: Information, reviews & contact
Imagine is a leading provider of 4G LTE and 5G broadband internet in Ireland. Founded in 1993 by Sean Bolger, Imagine’s main goal is to bring high-speed broadband coverage to the country’s underserved rural and regional areas.
What are 4G LTE advanced and 5G?4G LTE, which stands for Fourth Generation Long-Term Evolution, and 5G, or Fifth Generation, are standards for wireless broadband communications. They are designed to provide quicker speeds than the previous networks, such as 3G and 4G.
Imagine Communications Group Limited (also known as Imagine Communications or just Imagine) is currently focused on closing the digital divide by bringing high-speed internet to rural and regional areas across Ireland.
In early 2019, the company announced it would invest €300 million to extend fast 5G broadband connections to over 1 million homes and businesses. Bolger stated that this initiative would be “life-changing for people who are commuting to Dublin or people who don’t have the opportunity to have a second income because of poor broadband.” source: The Times
Later that year, Imagine confirmed the first phase of the rollout was complete after making high-speed broadband available to over 800,000 premises across more than 31,000 townlands. People in these underserved areas were originally told it would take five to seven years to have access to this sort of wireless network.
You might be wondering how Imagine is able to do this so quickly. The solution lies in its infrastructure. Instead of installing FTTP, Imagine relies on fixed wireless internet to build its network. It is much cheaper and requires significantly less time to set up.
What is FTTP?Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), or fibre to the home (FTTH), involves digging up roads to install fibre optic cables all the way to your home. What is fixed wireless internet?Fixed wireless internet uses signal rather than cables. An antenna is installed on the house, which has a wireless connection to a tower nearby. When the connection is received from the tower, it passes from the antenna down a short cable to the router inside the house.
Before we have a more detailed look at what exactly Imagine has to offer, below is a brief timeline to summarize how the company got to where it is today:
1993 - Sean Bolger launches ITL in Ireland.
1998 - Global Telesystems (GTS) buys ITL for €213 million.
2001 - Bolger buys back ITL and rebrands the company as Imagine.
2008 - Imagine acquires Irish Broadband for €47 million.
2016 - Imagine sells business division to Magnet Networks.
2018 - Brookfield Asset Management acquires 50.1% of Imagine for €120 million.
2019 - Announcement of €300m investment to bring high-speed broadband to rural areas.
Unlike most leading broadband companies, which may offer TV packages, Imagine only provides broadband and landline services. Below you will find a more in-depth description of these offers.
Imagine Broadband Offers
Imagine offers just one broadband package, the Home Broadband and Call Pack for €59.99 per month. Whether or not this package is actually available to you depends on your location.
To find out if your home is in an area that has coverage, you can simply go to the website and click on “Check Coverage.” You will need to enter your name, email, mobile number and Eircode, and then select “Check Residential.”
If you do not live in an area with coverage, Imagine says it is always expanding its coverage to reach more homes. With the details you provided, the company will keep you updated about coverage arriving in your area.
Let’s have a look at what all this package includes:
|Package||Price||Broadband Features||Included Call Pack Features||Contract Length|
|Home Broadband and Call Pack||
€59.99 per month (including VAT)
Speeds up to 150 Mb
International and national calls
Imagine can not guarantee that the broadband speeds will continuously reach 150 Mbps, as this also depends on network usage, location, your devices, among other factors.
Even though Imagine says the package includes unlimited broadband data usage, it is actually capped at 1 TB per month. Luckily, it is very unlikely that you and your family will exceed this amount. That would require four people each to stream more than five hours of Netflix every day.
It’s important to understand that if you decide to cancel the service, you must give 30 days notice, and the installed equipment must be returned to Imagine. Also, if you cancel before the 24-month contract period ends, you will still have to pay the monthly fee of €59.99 for the remaining months.
How does the Installation work?
The installation costs €150, with €100 to be paid upfront and the remaining €50 to appear on your first bill. Extra charges may apply if the installation is non-standard.
There are two slots available for installation appointments: between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The installation typically takes about 90 minutes. Someone who is at least 18 years old must be at the property to sign when the installation is complete.
The engineer will position the antenna in the location with the best signal and then run the cable into the house. After signing up, you should wait until the equipment is successfully installed before cancelling your service with your old broadband provider.
Imagine Landline Offers
The landline offer is already included in the broadband package as a free add-on. It includes local and national calls, as well as calls to UK landlines and 60 minutes to Irish mobiles.
The plan only covers the first 60 minutes of a phone call. Therefore, in the case of a lengthy conversation, we recommend hanging up and redialing after 59 minutes to avoid standard rates.
If Imagine discovers you are abusing the use of your call pack with excessive use, the provider may limit your phone service.
Imagine Mobile Offers
Imagine does not currently have any sort of offers for mobile phones. At the moment, the company is primarily focused on delivering high-speed broadband access to rural areas.
Does Imagine have Services for Businesses?
Since selling the business division of Imagine Communications to Magnet Networks in 2016, Imagine only provides internet broadband and landline services for small businesses. The package is exactly the same as the home offer.
Even though the business broadband offer appears cheaper than the residential offer on the Imagine website, don’t be fooled! They are exactly the same. The residential broadband price already includes the VAT at 23%, while the business offer, listed as at just €48.77 per month instead of €59.99, does not.
Imagine Customer Reviews
Rate My ISP(Irish Service Provider) has 191 customer reviews of Imagine, with reviews ranging from one to five stars. Trustpilot Ireland has 30 customer reviews, with an average rating of two stars. While this seems like a poor rating, it is actually pretty similar to those of other internet service providers in Ireland.
Satisfied customers praised Imagine for its super-fast connection speeds and courteous customer service representatives. They said the installation process was fast and professional.
On the other hand, unhappy customers complained about inconsistent internet connections and slow speeds. Many stated they had trouble reaching a customer service representative, and when they were promised multiple callbacks or email responses, the Imagine’s agents never followed through.

On Glassdoor, Imagine has 19 reviews with an average rating of 2.5 stars out of 5. The average rating slightly increases to 3 stars on Indeed Ireland, but this only includes four reviews.
Positive reviews from past and present Imagine employees stated that the work was challenging and rewarding. Employees also mentioned they benefit from having friendly coworkers and flexible work hours.
On the contrary, negative reviews are generally related to low pay, problems with management, and lack of upward mobility within the company.
