Your GPRN number can be found on the top of any gas bill or by calling Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 464 464. Your GPRN number or, Gas Point Reference Number, is a unique 7-digit code that identifies your home's connection to the gas network. A GPRN number is important to have when you want to switch gas suppliers, or to report a fault with your gas supply.
How Do I Find My GPRN Number?
While bills from gas providers can be different, you will generally find it in the top right-hand corner of your bill.
Much like MPRN numbers for electricity and smart meters, GPRN numbers in Ireland are fixed to a certain location and are not unique to you or your energy supplier. If you move home, your GPRN number will change to that of your new property.

How Do I Find My GPRN Number Without a Bill?
If you don't have a bill at hand and don't know the GPRN number of the property, you can find it by:
Asking the previous owner if you have purchased the property.
Ask your property manager or the landlord if you are renting the property
Contact Gas Networks Ireland and ask for your GPRN number.
Gas Networks Ireland can be contacted on 1800 464 464 open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 5:30 pm.
Is My GPRN the Same as My Meter Number?
No. The GPRN number refers to the location of a connection to the gas network, while the meter number usually refers to a serial number of a specific meter. If you call Gas Networks Ireland to get your GPRN number, you could be asked to provide the meter serial number(MSN) or the address to help them identify your meter's location.
How Do I Find My GPRN When Moving Home?
The GPRN is fixed to the location of the property, not to you or your gas account.
This is the most important fact to remember when moving, as your actions depend on whether you are moving out or moving in.
Moving Out: Closing Your Account
When you move out of a property, you do not take your GPRN with you; it remains assigned to the connection point. You must follow these steps to close your account:
Take a Final Meter Reading: Record the reading on your last day at the property.
Contact Your Current Supplier: Provide them with your GPRN, the final meter reading, and your new forwarding address.
Confirm Closure: Your supplier will use the GPRN and the reading to generate your final bill, ensuring you are not charged for the next occupant's gas usage.
Moving In: Taking Over a New Supply
When you move into a new house or apartment, you need to find the GPRN for that new address to set up your own account.
Check for Previous Bills: The easiest way to find the GPRN is on a bill left by the previous occupant, or by asking your landlord or estate agent.
Contact Gas Networks Ireland: If you cannot find a bill, call Gas Networks Ireland at 1800 464 464 (Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 5:30 pm). You will need to provide the property's address or the meter serial number (MSN) to allow them to locate and confirm the GPRN.
Register with a Supplier: Once you have the GPRN, you must contact your preferred gas supplier immediately to register the supply in your name. This prevents the supply from being accidentally disconnected.
What Is a GPRN Number?
A GPRN Number, or Gas Point Reference Number, is a 7-digit code that identifies your home's connection to the gas network.
Each home will have a unique number and will look something like this:
10 006 759 704
The first two digits indicate the system operator (often 10 in Ireland), the next 7 digits are sequentially generated, and the final digit is a “check” digit (which is used to detect simple errors in a series of digits).
Why Do I Need To Know My GPRN?
It's important to know your GPRN number for several reasons, including:
Gas Billing Your GPRN number is used by natural gas suppliers to accurately identify and bill your gas usage. It ensures that the correct gas consumption is associated with your account.
Gas Switching If you decide to switch your gas supplier, providing your GPRN number to the new supplier is essential. It allows the new supplier to initiate the transfer process smoothly and ensures the continuity of your gas service.
Gas Meter Reading Sometimes, you might need to provide meter readings to your gas supplier with your GPRN, but it's usually not common unless you are trying to identify the property.
Reporting a Fault If you experience any issues with your gas supply, such as leaks or disruptions, providing your GPRN number helps energy companies identify the specific gas connection and address the problem efficiently.
General Gas Inquiries When contacting gas suppliers or Gas Networks Ireland about your gas connection, mentioning your GPRN number helps them locate your property quickly and provide accurate information.
Does a PAYG Meter Have a GPRN Number?
If you have a Pay As You Go meter, your GPRN number can be found on your 'top up' receipt from Payzone.
How To Get a GPRN for a New Build Property
If you are moving into a newly constructed home that has never had a gas supply before, you need to follow a process to have a GPRN generated. A GPRN must exist before any gas can flow into the property.
Apply to Gas Networks Ireland: The first step is to contact Gas Networks Ireland to apply for a new connection. This process involves installing the physical pipework from the main gas line to your property boundary.
GPRN Assignment: Once this connection work is completed and registered, Gas Networks Ireland will generate and assign a brand new 7-digit GPRN to your property.
Choose a Supplier and Install the Meter: With your GPRN in hand, you must then contact your chosen gas supplier (e.g., Bord Gáis Energy, Electric Ireland, etc.). You provide them with the GPRN, and they will arrange for an engineer to install the gas meter and turn on the supply.
