Is SSE Airtricity Any Good?
SSE Airtricity is one of Ireland's long standing energy suppliers and has been in the market since 1997. Though originally called Eirtricity, it was bought by the UK group SSE - one of the UK’s bigger suppliers - in 2008 and later changed its name to SSE Airtricity, and since then has been one of the major suppliers in the Irish energy market.

According to the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU), SSE Airtricity had the least number of complaints per 10,000 customers referred. It also had only 1 complaint out of 6 upheld in favour of a customer. I was with SSE for around 10 years and found them brilliant. Fantastic customer service (ok hard to get through but at least you get a call back when they give the option on their menu!) and flexible with payments. Unfortunately they got now very expensive and find it so hard as the customer service seems appaling with others. Maybe I am spoilt. I've never had a complaint to be honest, I've opened two accounts in the last 5 years and they seemed nice when I've talked to them. The site is very well done (although a bit slow) and very easy to navigate and check your expenses, bills, and understand what you pay. I have this offer about 10-15% off for the first couple years, but when it expires I usually call them and ask them to renew it. So far so good.

Absolute nightmare to contact, on hold for 40 mins and then you're cut-off or cannot connect to any number I have tried. Trying to contact since Nov 2022 and it's now January 2023 and our meter won't take any top-up code…

After Electric Ireland increased there prices by 10% a door to door sales girl from this company knocked on my door and tricked me to move to this company by saying that Electric Ireland have increased and gave a much cheaper price. I was stupid and believed her and a week after SSE Airtricity increases my bills by 40%!! I was completely tricked by this horrible company in these though times. Now my exit charge is massive. I don't know how these absolute scumbag companies can get away with this behavior. This is by far the worst company iv ever been with.
There are also customers who have complained about the long wait times on the phones and the lack of reward for customer loyalty:
Long delays in answering calls for renewals (30 minutes x 3) No real benefits for long term customers. Hard to believe they got customer service awards

Overall, SSE Airtricity does a little better on Google reviews compared to the reviews on Trustpilot, scoring 1.4 out of 5. Out of 226 reviews, however, the vast majority have been negative, however there have been attempts from SSE Airtricity to leave a comment on the reviews to give them alternative solutions to the problems. Another detail to note is that Google themselves say that their reviews aren’t verified so it might be best to take them with a pinch of salt.

How Good Is the SSE Airtricity App?
SSE Airtricity also has an app that is available for your phone, so you can control your bills, usage and top up without having to call them up through using your SSE Airtricity login. The app is available from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and has also had some reviews on both of these sites.
How Are the SSE Airtricity Reviews on the App Store?
The SSE Airtricity app scores 1.7 out of 5 on the App Store. The typically complaints have been that the app is slow and doesn’t offer the functionality that it should:
I’ve to agree with the negative reviews, unfortunately: the login experience is awful, as I’ve (as everyone should) a non-trivial unique password, and rely on iCloud password manager that isn’t supported here (crashes the application). Pasting the password doesn’t work either, took me 4 attempts at carefully typing in a long and meaningless text just to get in! Depending on the time of the day, responsiveness goes from slow to unusable: overall, I see no reason why I should use the app over the website.”
